Mels says in his book (If I recall correctly) that he derived the plant
spacing
with in each row as specified for the seeds. So if some seeds said plant
12
inches apart in rows 3 feet apart, he gave 12 inches by 12 inches. In his
book
he suggests 16 plants to the square foot for onions but does not
specifically
mention green onions. (If he does please tell me which page).
The last bag of onion sets I purchased said the same spacing as Mel for
full onions but said pack them as close as you can for green
onions/scallions.
I interpreted this to mean them wall to wall and I have somewhere between
64-100 in one square. I also planted onion seeds (for late season green
onions)
just as tight. Actually a little closer. I am using 1 inch spacing or
11x11 or 121
per squarefoot. This is on two squares. In case I am totally wrong here I
also
have 2squares with 16 to the square foot for both seeds and sets.
So this seed providers instructions seems to indicate very close.
This is the first year I have planted onions this close so I have
no idea how will it will or won't work.
Anybody else planting green onions?
