Depth of Beds

Now that spring seems to be settling in my husband wants to build some raised
beds for additonal planting.
We looked in Mel's book and it wasn't clear how deep the beds should be..we
thought 6 - 12 inches deep was what he was suggesting but weren't one hundred
percent sure.
We do all our gardening in containers and raised beds...we would appreciate
any help.
