My SO and I visited a local community garden last summer and were intrigued
by a 10" to 12" diametre PVC pipe standing vertically on a garden plot.  It
stood about 5' to 6' out of the ground and had scattered holes all up the
sides with strawberry plants poking out.  It was freshly planted at the
time so we don't know how well they did with a crop.
