Out of self-defense I bought a strawberry jar this season. Hubby had found
some awful pottery 'thing'. Painted flaking orange paint, has a big gaping
hole like it might be a ceramic cooker on legs or something. Big tube hole
in the top. (Imagine a 2 foot adobe 'bread kiln').
Hi Martha,
Perhaps I'm wrong, but the 'jar' you are describing sounds like an
outdoor ceramic wood stove. You put sand in the bottom and lay your
wood on the sand, light it, and the smoke goes out the tube top. It
acts similar to those newfangled patio fireplaces you can roll around
on wheels. They are generally very expensive, I've priced some of a
decent size from $80 to $150. Here in Southern California we call them
Chimeneas (spelling?), pronounced Chi-muh-ni-as, or Chi-muh-ni-a. If I
had one of those, I'd use it in winter to keep my patio warm enough to
barbecue on! Have fun with it! You can burn wood in it. (Or you could
struggle with strawberries in it, but I don't know how they would get
enough sunlight or keep moist enough...)
