Home-made wood mulch

I recently bought a chipper/shredder and had some local tree trimming 
services drop off loads of roughly shredded wood from their jobs.  Now I've 
begun shredding that wood into a finer wood mulch.  My intent was to use this 
mulch on my gardens, both veggie and flower.  2 questions for you all:

1.  Why is my wood mulch so different from the wood mulch from the nurseries? 
 Mine is very light in color and theirs is always very dark.

2.  Someone suggested that I might be inviting insect poblems.  Termites, 
wood ticks, etc.  

What do you all think?
