Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi Kim - I fertilize with my homemade compost soup (kitchen scraps, 1
scoop of cottonseed meal with water to cover, blended in my Vita-Mix and
poured around my veggies). That's all I fertilize with, as chemical
fertilizers actually kill the mycchorizae in your soil (these are the
little feeder root looking fungus that helps to bring moisture and
nutrients to the roots of your plants). I always fertilize organically
unless it's in a pot with soilless mix. You can also fertilize
organically with fish emulsion, blood meal etc.
I mulch with bagged organic compost generally. Last year I mulched with
a product called Forest Humus that I bought at my agriculture supply
store. I stay away from products that have sewage sludge in them. You
can mulch with just about anything. I always buy my mulch though
because I don't have enough of my homemade compost to mulch with and I
want to put raw materials on the soil. Sometimes that can tie up
nitrogen in the soil as it begins to break down.
Good luck
