Dera Sheryl, I would cut the broccoli off at ground level and scratch the surface of the soil in preperation for another crop. The roots of the broccoli will break down just fine and contribute to the soil of the bed. You might want tocut as much of the thick stalk out as you can because this sometimes interfers with succession plantings of some things.
