cracking tomatoes

last year all of my tomatoes cracked (a very sad person i was!) but this year
none have so far.  the biggest difference between this year and last is that
last year i was watering shallowly almost every day (and forgetting to every
once in a while) while this year i water only on wed. and sat. deeply; i also
have lightly mulched all my plants.  it's my understanding that this new
watering method forces the roots to grow deeply into the soil, thus being less
suceptable to daily water changes.  the other possibility is that i'm growing
thicker-skinned tomatoes.  can't comment on this last possibility!
