I'm growing tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, etc. etc. together with drip irrigation and good mulch cover. They get a bit of water every day, and capillary action spreads the moisture evenly throughout the soil, ensuring the greatest amount of microbal activity in the organic beds. The mulch cover really keeps the soil from drying out too fast, it makes a difference all on it's own. Anyway, it's working really well, the plants are doing fantastic and so far no splits or many problems to speak of at all.
