<< I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has found the "perfect" sqft
arrangement for corn, as well as the names of any varieties that have worked
well in raised beds. I have four beds, two 3X8X2, one 4X8X2, and one 6X8X2.
I didn't plan corn this year because I thought the beds weren't big enough,
but now that I look again at the 6X8 bed I think it might be possible. If
anyone has any good sqft advice so I can plan for next year I'd love to hear
it! 8-)

This year was my first year growing corn so I'm no expert. I planted the
first set of seeds at 4 per sqft. This was after reading an article in
Organic Gardening where Mel said you could plant 4 per sqft instead of 1 per
sqft as the book indicates. This spacing was too close together and the ears
were only half pollinated. The second set of seeds I planted 16 per 3x3
square. This works by planting 4 per 18" square instead of 4 per 12" square.
I had much better results with the second crop. Any of your beds are big
enough for growing corn. I use Hookers Sweet Corn which I got from Seeds Of
Change. It is a dwarf variety which grown 4-6 feet high and has 1-3 ears on
each stalk. The ears are 5-8" long and are much smaller than what my wife
calls 'normal' corn. Hope this helps.
