Re: Square Foot Planting Question

Toni,

I planted my vining plants in this manner as well, and the beans, cukes
and peas keep trying to tangle onto each others lines. I tried
retraining them as they grow (which takes care every other day or more)
and this works okay, but if they are really unruly you may try the trick
I used with the zucchini.

I planted 2 plants in the last 3x1 1/2 foot area of my raised beds (I
was greedy with my limited space). What I have done is to use some
welded wire fencing with a clear plastic over it (I used a trash bag)
as a wall between the zucchini and the rest of the plants. This is
training them to crawl out towards the grass, which is where I want them
to go. You could try a tall/thin version of this in between the rows of
cukes, beans, tomatoes, ect.

If you use a clear plastic, it won't block any of the sun, and I think
it may actually make a single square a little warmer. If you don't want
this, you may try using a light screening material (like is used on your
household windows. This may sound like it would look bad, but I have
had multiple compliments on the neat appearance of my garden, as it is
in the front yard, on the side of the house, where all the neighbors can
see (this was the only good sun spot available to me).
