Tomato planting question

Hello everyone,

I had only two 4x4 squares this year(my first using sqft) and was
pleased enough to add two more next year. My question is this: I don't
have alot of space(four 4x4 squares seems to be about it) and I would
like to know if anyone has planted a whole block of tomatoes or if
anyone has planted three sides of a square with tomatoes and then use
the middle squares for items like, lettuce, spinach and radishes. I
figure that the tomatoes will still get plenty of sun but will also
provide shade in the afternoon for the other veggies in the middle. Does
this sound feasible? I think that it would look something like this:

S-spinach
R-radish                        T       S       S       T
