My books told me specifically NOT to add nitrogen to the bed that root veggies were going to be planted in, that it causes forking and knotting. Knots can also be caused by root nematodes. Root veggies do benefit from an addition of potash, however. I don't know the secret of "sweet" carrots--some of mine taste soapy, some taste sweet--but I also planted three different varieties and have no idea which is which (note to myself for next year---LABEL!) If anybody knows what the deal is with soapy tasting carrots, enlighten me!
