Harvesting potatoes

I planted potatoes this year.  Never grown them before, so I don't know
when to harvest them.  Some of the plants are still green and growing,
but some of the plants have turned brown and died.  Should I dig up
those potatoes and leave the others until the plant dies or the time is
right (whenever that is)?  When is the right time to harvest potatoes
(again, I am wanting to store these for use during the winter.)
