Doreen, Have you noticed how thick they now plant the field corn in Illinois
& Indiana. Almost looks as though it were drilled in the rows with the rows
close together. We used to plant it in hills 3 feet apart and rows 3 feet
apart. Yet they still get bumper crops with those humongous ears. I think
it's done by fertilizing almost continuously at the fastest rate that the
corn can take up the nutrients. I once thought of using their methods in my
sqft garden but when I found out more about it I decided against it.
Regarding roasting ears from field corn. I also remembered I liked them
better. But now I find they aren't as good as I remembered. I still grow a
small patch for corn meal and fodder for the horse.
