Barb,
The "best" edging for raised beds is what will work for you.
1X10 would be ok if you use ell brackets on the corners (2 per corner) AND
don't ever kneel on the top of the edging, it's really tough on knees!
2X10 or 2X8 would both be ok and you could get away with butt joints at the
corners, easier on the knees, too.
I prefer stock 4" lumber (ie 4X4s or 2X4s, flat) with several tiers nailed
over the previous tier with staggered corners (overlapping, that is) to a
height that suits you. Cut the lengths 3-1/2" longer than the inside
dimension and overlap clock wise one tier, counter clockwise the next, ad
inf.
This has really worked for me as I have a sharp eye for scrap lumber and
don't mind scabbing pieces together to make the sides, all that costs is
time and a couple of extra nails. The design is incredibly strong and will
last a long time using untreated wood.
Now you all know that my family came from NE and "Down East."
I now have six beds, the newest three of which are as I have described. The
first three, set up, filled with soil/manure/. . . , and planted within 48
hrs of closing on my house, Jun 97, were built of pre cut, scrounged 1 & 2"
mat'ls and I have the sore knees in testament thereof.
The scrap 2x4s have worked the best for me as they are easier to cut with a
circular saw than 4X4s, you can use smaller nails AND the scrap is easier to
toss in the wood stove. I would hate to do it that way if I had to BUY the
lumber.
The fact of the matter is that you have to choose the methodology that works
best for you, be it contractor poured concrete retainers or pieces if
cardboard shipping boxes supported with stakes and duct tape.
I hope that you receive sufficient feed back to enable you to evolve a
suitable plan.
