Why are you going to destroy food to enrich your garden? This goes against the
entire ethic of gardening for food.

Compost is how plant wastes are returned to the soil. If you can't locate
sufficient quantities of waste materials, grow a cover crop and dig it in to
enrich the soil.
"City slickers" (as you describe yourself) can usually locate organic matter
by:

1. Contacting city or county parks and maintenance department - they'll have
plenty of clippings, trimmings, and leaves. Try the maintenance department of
office parks and malls - they usually must pay to dispose of the stuff, or can
refer you to their subcontractor.

2. Contact schools and other institutions with kitchens, and restaurants -
they'll have plenty of vegetable scraps.

3. Contact zoos or police departments that keep mounted patrols.

Please don't waste food to grow food.
