I just wanted to chime in on this. I still have some Sweet Potatoes
growing, even though I didn't water them during our drought! After reading
the suggestion to use them for a summer cover crop, I went out and really
looked at them. They are growing great! But the area under them is -very
dry- even though we have had frequent heavy rain. I suspect that they are
hugh water hogs when they get the chance.
By very dry I mean completely dry, I couldn't get any soil to clump. In
other beds I still have earth worms in moist soil, like under the peppers
and my few remaining Cherry tomatoes. But I imagine that the worms under
the Sweet Potatoes are long gone.
As a cover crop, I don't know if this is a good feature... I also worry
about ever getting every little peice out of the bed, since I find that the
smallest piece of broken root grows vigorously.
