I heartily encourage more square footers to read the Jeavons book.1. It
puts Mel's squarefoot approach into historical context. Knowing about
European and Oriental intensive approaches allows you to adapt related
techniques that suit your climate. It also opens up possibilities beyond
the sqft layout, which are useful as the garden expands.

2. It puts intensive gardening in ecological perspective. I am an
engineer and a former New England resident, so I appreciate Mel's can-do
practicality as much as anyone........but the squarefoot book is short
on gardening lore, and British friends have pointed out its typically
American ya-gotta-have-a-gimmick focus on quick solutions.
Squarefoot is great for getting people gardening ("It's not a garden,
it's just a small plot, what have you got to lose") and delivering the
success that hooks people on gardening. The next step is to see the
importance of intensive gardening in the larger eco-context.

From my first single-square sqft garden on the East Coast, I have
incorporated ideas from Biodynamic, Dryland, Lazybed, and Permaculture
approaches as my location has changed and my garden has grown in size.
The Jeavons book is a good springboard beyond square foot.
