Acorn squash

Hi to all,

I am in my first year of gardening and of course first time sq ft gardening.  
I am delurking because I don't know for sure when acorn squash is ready for 
harvest.  I picked the first one I thought was ready but my husband didn't 
think it was when we sat down to eat it.  I have a half dozen that are deep 
green with very dark stems and I'm thinking maybe it's time as they have been 
this way for a week now.  When is acorn squash best for picking?  Thanks a 
bunch!  Deb in zone 9
