For myself, I like to leave the squash on the vine until the vine dies back.
I then wash the squash with a very mild bleach solution to kill any molds
etc..., and then store in a dark, dry place. The squash may be eaten at this
point, though the variety I like to grow (Table King) will turn pumpkin
orange after a couple of months. It seems to have a slightly better texture
after a couple of months of storage.
