Rebar - SqFt Greenhouses - Big Melon Support - Seed Heaters

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

>Could you please explain to me what 'rebar' is? It's not a term I've come
across Down Under. As I hope to make raised beds soon I'm trying to pick up
some good construction advice.
TIA,
Ann
---------------
To be yet more descriptive... the stuff is solid rod. It is fairly tough, and
slightly harder to cut with a hacksaw than a soft common pipe is. This is not
due to hollowness of the pipe, but probably carbon content of REinforcement
Bar.

Think of the ridges like a thread, but spaced as far apart as the diameter of
the rebar, and unlike a shape thread, a lower height. like a thread ground 1/2
way down. These ridges are not squared off, just raised rounded ridges. They
go around in not just a single direction, but both directions, plus
circumferentially. It is usually a dull semidark gray, but will eventually
show rust. Takes a good while.

So a piece of pipe could be used. But is not as rigid or tough and being
hollow, would tend slightly to split if your ground required hard pounding on
the end of the pipe. Most rod bend more readily than REBAR. Some folks tell
me they bend it 90 degrees at the end or into a huge staple, to hold
structures against wind. If you do, since it has no end anchor device, pound
at an intelligent angle, depending on how the wind might lift your structure.

I was imaginging a 12 yr old chasing a hefty size 14 yr old and bounging off
garden bed sides. 1/4" rebar might give way some. Tho I hope this is not a
prob I will have, some of my son's friends illustrate there are some sizeable
folks in this world, who are simply larger than my "average" heritage. They
would exert great forces bounding playfully, yet 'carefully,' in their folks'
backyard.

This gave way to wondering about end joining of bed walls. I assume hefty
galvanized or deck nails are used if not lag screws. Thoughts? In addition
to sinking Lag screw heads 3/8" & using washers, to protect ankles and wood
splitting, respectively.

BTW, I have a couple $7-8 garden construction books to which I sometimes
refer. They have little to do with these items in this situation, directly,
but remind of of general obvious things we forget, and discuss general
construction.

Then in rainy areas... do we drill a weep hole we can uncork at a reasonable
level? Say a hair below soil level and cover w a coffee can plastic lid
inside, held in place by dirt, and open if we get a flood?

Ron, I can't imagine paint looking good on garden bed walls. When you next
post, can you toss the colors you use/suggest in as an aside? I know houses
in the Seattle area on waterfront are requirted to paint (if they paint) in
earth tones. Are these availble in boat paint now? (For any who might go that
route...)

Melon Support Hose
Jeff's book also shows panty hose used to hold up really big melons. The pic
is not resolved sufficiently as to illustrsate the particular size used, <g>
or if added strength was garnered through loosely stitching up the waist, thus
offering a double layer. It rather appears they are held via tying the legs,
and the melon just sits in the upside down crotch, relying on stretch for fit.
It apppeared to be a 20-30 lb watermelon. No brand was represented either,
but it would clue guys in to only buy their honeys the best, as it will soon
be on display. Pick patterns and colors to go with your garden motif.
Certain colors may attract hummimgbirds, etc.

These all fit of 4x length SqFt beds, so seem appropriate to me. And detail
is the difference between an old VW and a Rolls Royce, and goes to frustration
and failure vs fruition and fulfillmant I feel. If any disagree, there is a
ColdGreenhouse oneList who might relish this part of the discussion... I'm
easy... no need to complain to Farmer John, unless you prefer. I don't mind
that, except for his sake. I prefer public humiliation, so others may
agree/disagree/discuss, but a private complaint to me will not get your name
or post published here or any sort of a reprisal.

May we discuss seed heaters some more, and associated thermostadts? Or ditto
in an-ot-garded@egroups? Rapidly approaching Spring makes this an issue which
is heating up, like these cold frames.
Thx all,
Bill
