Re: going through withdrawls

Holly,

I don't usually post much, mostly a lurker, but I think you will find that
the "shorter" growing season may not affect you as much as you think... I
am in Northern Michigan... we have about 100 frost-free days in our
summers. The main difference is where you buy your seeds. I get seed
catalogs from Maine, and they have tons of shorter season crops. Here are
a few that are online, to get you started:
Johnny's
www.johnnyseeds.com

Pinetree Garden Seeds
www.superseeds.com

Territorial Seed Company (actually in Oregon, not Maine)
www.territorial-seed.com

Shepherd's Garden Seeds
www.shepherdseeds.com

Also, there is a co-op in Maine, with excellent prices. They don't have a
phone they answer, or an online site (to control costs) but you can fax
them with a sheet of paper with your name and address requesting their
catalog...
FedCo Seeds
(207) 873-7333

So, don't despair, you'll just have to make some mental adjustments.
Getting right out there as soon as it warms up, no time for dally-ing!
Also, you might check with the locals to find out what your frost-free
period actually is... My sister in in Philadelphia, and her winters are
surprisingly mild... (oh, and a word of advice... Northerners don't much
appreciate being called "yankees!")

Happy Gardening in your new home!
Dawn
