>Katherine, I agree completely with you! I really do believe in Mel's
gardening techniques but he is definitly short on the "beauty" end of the
square foot garden. I started with a 4x8 patch last year and this weekend
have begun on a 24x28 space dedicated to this method. I, like you, want
this to be an asset to my landscaping efforts as well as the fun of growing
our own vegies. What I plan to do is rent a sod cutter and remove all sod
in the 20x28 space, place the boxes , cover the paths with a strong
landscape fabric so water can drain through but weeds can't grow through,
and cover with mulch. The city offers free mulch from ground up limbs. It
does turn grey after a while but that is not bad. You do have to haul it
yourself and spread it. It should be about 2-3 inches deep in paths. Don't
use it in the beds. If you want something easy to install, long lasting,
cost effective, and sharp looking, buy bails of pine straw. I buy mine at
Lowes or Home Depot. It cost about $3.80 per but you don't have to pay
anyone to haul and shovel it out like mulch. It is very slow to decompose.
You can spread it out yourself. I use it in the more natural parts of my
landscape. You can put it in your beds too. Of course you can always buy
the bulk hardwood mulch at a garden center. I pay about 17.00 for a yard
which fills a small pickup bed. It will look good, cover paths and beds,
but you have to haul and spread. I am new at sfg but have done general
gardening for some time. I am 50 yr. young and still do all the hard work
gardening requires. It keeps me health and happy. You go girl! Have fun
with this!
