Speaking of Ants and Cinnamon

Like others on this list I prefer to live and let live (barring my
intermittent battles with the slug tribe). Last year while trying to keep
aphids off some of my plants, I read somewhere that ants will protect aphids
in order to harvest the aphid's sweet excretions. There were plenty of big
ants on my hop vines and they seemed to get alert/defensive whenever
ladybugs came near, though I never saw them attack. Supposedly ants do not
like to cross coffee grounds and the directions said to cover the area at
the base of the plants with used grounds. I did this on my brussel sprouts,
broccoli, camellias and hops. I was also spraying the aphids off with water
but there did seem to be some impact, that is, less ants and aphids. Has
anyone else heard of this ?

By the way, I swear I read on rec.gardening that sprinkling cinnamon would
help arrest damping off. Maybe I'm confusing it with ant repellant ? In any
case I'm trying it on some leek seedlings I recently started.
