Several people have affirmed that the problem is only second generation
(seeds)
and in fact my copy of Rodale's Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening agrees.
However, my experience last summer when I planted small sugar pumpkins next
to spaghetti squash (seeds direct from mail order company) I ended up with
some pumpkins that were distinctly stringy inside like spaghetti squash (and
some that were normal). The fruit was standard pumpkin orange and standard
shape.
If this isn't a cross-pollination problem, what could have caused it?
For myself, I'm going to keep my summer squash and winter squash as far
away from each other as I can this summer.
