The two cats are my own. They love the veggie garden, especially near the compost pile. When I plant seeds directly, this year, as my cats are new and young, I bought some bird netting that I will drape over wood stakes until the seedlings are big enough to withstand their ministrations. I don't know if you want to spend the money, but we use soaker hoses along the areas in the squares where the seeds are planted. This seems to keep them moist enough to germinate and grow up.
