If it is well and truely composted material it is certainly not too
late. Some of us even make compost 'tea' and drench our plants with it.
Uncomposted material will tie up some nitrogen for a while.
I have used partially composted material in my garden and
supplimented the nitrogen for a few weeks and have been satisfied with
the results.
