Hi Julie:

I went overboard last year too. I believe "the book" calls for 2 foot
spacing on tomatoes. Last year I planted them about 1 1/2 feet apart in a
hexagonal pattern. I planted poles between each plant, and ran twine
among and around them as the plants grew. Worked for me! This was is a
bed three tomato plants wide (the outermost plants were right at the
edges) and about ten feet long.
