Last year, I planted my toms at 1.5 foot intervals and ran each plant up a
string.  I was able to plant the plants in a straight row next to a wood
fence. I buried a stake in the ground next to each plant and then ran the
string up to the top of the fence.  This process worked well but took some
time to get the hang of twisting the vines.
