tomato spacing and sqft gardening in general

Greetings!
I've been following the thread about tomato spacing with great interest,
learning a lot about tomatoes.  I'm trying to figure out what kind of
configuration some of you are growing them in.  One comment was that
their tomatoes were spaced 1 foot apart.  Would that be in single file?
I want to economize on space, but I'm trying to figure out how to pick
them too.

I'd like to do as much of my vegetable garden in the sqft method as I can
this year.  Do many of you experienced sqft gardeners really do most, if
not all, of your vegetables this way?  (I know that some like asparagus
don't need to be done in the sqft way.)  I'll actually begin to plant
some of my vegetables very soon here in the Piedmont region of SC, so if
I'm going to do it, I need to get it all planned out now.  TIA!
