Hi, I've been lurking for a couple of weeks and I'm learning a lot -- you seem like a really helpful and knowledgeable bunch! I bought Mel's book a couple of months ago and I'm planning to start a smallish (2 or 3 4x4 blocks) sqft garden this spring on my hopefully-soon-to-be-purchased land (right now I live in an apt. without so much as a patio). I'm really excited and have many questions and clarifications, but I'll try to restrain myself to one or two per post: Two things that I feel must be in my dream garden, which Mel doesn't address specifically are basil and watermelons. I found the spacing suggestions on the web site (1/sqft for basil, 1/2sqft for vine-type melons), but I'm wondering if anyone has anymore advice/experience they'd like to share. I was thinking of a smaller, realtively quick ripening variety of watermelon, like Yellow Doll, but even that has 4-7 lb. fruits according to my Fedco catalog -- d'you really think a trellis would support them? If not, does anyone have any suggestions for cheap/easy sling set-ups? Generally speaking, would you all say that I can follow Mel's guidelines for muskmelon growing? As far as basil: The 1/sqft spacing seems a bit extravagant to me, but then I've always grown it in small pots indoors, which isn't quite the same thing. Any suggestions on how much to plant and how long we can expect a harvest to last? There are 2 of us in the household and we'd be using it for lots of Thai stirfries, the occasional batch of pesto, and general-purpose seasoning in salads/sauces/etc. I guess that wraps it up -- thanks in advance for any pointers!
