I tried gardening in South Florida and in Central Florida. While in
Central FL I called the country agricultural extension office and
spoke with a master gardener there. He advised me that not an awful
lot grows in FL in the summer, other than heat tolerant tomatoes, some
corn, zucchini, etc. Most of the growing in FL seems to be done more
in the spring, fall, and winter seasons (what there are of them in
FL).
I'd suggest that you call your local extension office and ask them for
recommendations on types of vegetables to plant. Mine sent me some
information in the mail (which I unfortunately cannot find at the
moment, or I'd offer to send it on) including information on the type
of pests that one could expect.
Good luck to you.
