I don't rely on zones much anymore. An oldtimer once said that it's safe to
plant early spring crops when the mesquite blooms and the pecan trees start
to bud out. They're the absolute LAST things to break dormancy and they
usually don't lie about frost.
Our pecans are putting on bud stems and 'pinking up' now, but none have
begun to sprout leaves yet.
(The hard part is counting backwards from the last frost date if it's based
on a tree's estimation of when Winter ends!)
