I've been using a mulch called shredded redwood bark which I'm getting at a
local nursery pretty cheap. I think it's the left-over product from the
milling process, or some such thing. Does anyone else use this? The great
thing, IMO, is that it really handles my climate well. Keeps the moisture
in during the hot part of the summer, smothers weeds very well, totally
sticks together with no blow away, and it seems to be hanging in with this
rain and keeping the soil in place. Also easy to move aside and replace
when putting in transplants. Also, I had some snowpeas last year that got
to the stage you're describing. We just ate them;) They weren't quite as
good as the others, but not bad.
