RE: Starting From Seeds

Greg,

I'll take it in parts:

1. In my garage, I have a small table for seedlings. I use a 48 in
fixture with 2 "Sunshine" bulbs that produce full spectrum light. The
lights put out a little heat, but not much. I have a old heater I use
to warm the space just a little. I keep it about 68. I suppose I could
warm it more and get faster germination, but I haven't gotten around to
building something yet. The light is on a pulley. I keep it just above
the tallest seedlings.

2. I mix my own germinating soil from 1 part vermiculite, 1 part
perilite, and 3 parts peat moss. I fertilizer with very diluted fish
emulsion.

3. You can grow almost anything from seed. When I started gardening, I
grew everything except peas and spinach and root crops. This turned out
to be a ton of work. Now I just to pepper, eggplant, tomatoes, okra,
broccoli, cabbage, and such. Every thing else gets started from seed in
the garden. Most seedlings need the same thing, good light and moderate
warmth. I have good results from 68 degrees and full spectrum bulbs.

If your season is long enough, you might want to just start the "normal"
things under lights like tomatoes and peppers and such, and plant the
rest in the garden when warm enough.

Hope this helps!
