Last year was my first garden ever. I did a lot of setup work, building
raised beds, composting etc. for rich soils, and installing a nice drip
system. I used plants from Home Depot and had a very good yield, with
squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, and melons.
I like to start a few things from seed this year, so my questions are:
1. What kind of a setup do I need? I've read various descriptions
of hanging a flourescent light 4" above seedlings, then moving it up as
they grow; also keeping temperatures at certain ranges, etc. Basically I
have a garden window in my kitchen and a garage to work with in terms of
indoor space. The garage is a mess, but with effort I could make some
room. The garden window has lots of sun exposure; there's none in the
garage. Temperature in the house is 68-70 degrees; in the garage it
probably 45-65 most of the time, depending upon the weather outdoors. I
live in the eastern portion of the San Franciso Bay area, zone 9.
2. What do I need in the way of soil and fertilizer? How do the
requirements of seeds differ from those of the plants I buy in progress?
3. What plants are easy to grow from seed? What procedures should
I use with these? Are there some that don't require special lighting
and are tolerant to a range of temperatures?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give.
