Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
RE: concrete blocks, PT lumber, plastic lumber, etc. Why not use
regular wood. It does rot, but that's ok. If you use doubled up 2x6 it
will probably last at least five or six years, and probably more. You
will probably change around your garden anyway. A great source for free
wood is house construction sites. If you go and ask the builder if you
can have scraps, cut offs, etc, they will usually be more than glad to
let you take away whatever you want. You will usually get short pieces,
but you can scarf them together and make a pretty nice bed. Just down
the street from me is a church where the builder made a serious error.
They tore down half of the structure and there is a huge pile of 2x6
lumber, anywhere from six to sixteen feet long. I run into this
situation all the time.
Could I ask what may seem a dumb question. I am not a square foot
gardener (like the list, however) although I do grow on raised beds.
Why bother to put a border around the beds? seems like a lot of extra
work. Is there some major benefit I am missing?
