Well, if you handle one roughly, it may bite, but they are not
poisonous if that's what you're worried about.
Variations on the theme "garter snake" occur wild in most parts of the
country and are actually many different species. Most of them eat
insects, molluscs such as slugs and sufficiently small mammals. Most
pet stores carry a variety, but they don't tend to be cheap and may
not stick around if you let them loose in your garden.
