I don't know about buying them but they're fairly common in the wild, at
least in Virginia. They're essentially harmless to people, although I can't
say what one might do if you stepped on it. You can identify them as a dark
colored snake with two yellowish colored stripes going down the length of
the snake. The one I saw in my garden was about 2.5' - 3' long and about an
inch in diameter. If I could just it to eat the weeds along with the insects
and other critters. :-)
