RE: Diatomaceous earth

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Sand paper might be used on top of the soil as a deterrent to slugs, but
DE can also be turned into the earth to prevent root maggots and other
soil borne pests from destroying root crops.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between the DE sold for pool
and fish tank filters and that sold for garden use?  Of course the
companies that sell it for $5 a pound or more would say so, but is there
really?

Hi everyone!  I'm new on the list, but thought I'd throw my two cents
worth in here.

I read in Maureen Gilmer's The Budget Gardener that a good, cheap
alternative to DE is used belt sandpaper.  You can easily get it from
cabinetry shops or high school wookworking classes.  Have never tried
it, but it sounds reasonable.

Also, I am a Zone 4 person (2 hours north of Green Bay in Michigan's
Upper Penninsula.  We still have 3 feet of snow.  I don't even have a
plot of ground picked out yet (I have some ideas).  My yard is full of
grass, and I'm not sure how to even start.  I just read Mel's book, and
really like his ideas.  So, if you have any insider tips for me, I'd
appreciate them.

Thanks,
Autumn
