Re: Re: Artichokes

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Sandy,
The artichokes I started (they sprouted yesterday) are a new
variety--Imperial Star--a hybrid bred to produce buds from seed in one
season. Johnny's Selected Seed and Park Seed both carry them in their
catalogs. Johnny's is always very thorough in their culture info, and they
say nothing about culling Imperial Star. I seeded two seeds to each 3-inch
peat pot, and both seeds in each pot have germinated. They are all of equal
size. Of course, in a couple weeks, that may change. Since Imperial Star
produces in about 90 days after transplants go out in the garden, it should
be very easy to see what will produce. In my climate, they can't be carried
over--I'm in Zone 5--but in warmer areas where temps don't go below 25F, I
think you'd could expect the same kind of production in subsequent years.
Just my opinion--for what it's worth!
Doreen Howard
