Introduction, gardening conundrum

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the list. I've been lurking for about a week. I live in NW
Arkansas, in Zone 6. My special love is lettuce, although I'll grow just
about anything. I have a large library of seeds that I've been collecting
over the past 5 years.

Last year I moved to a duplex where I don't have much of a yard. My
landlord says I can grow anything, but considering my largely gravel side
yard, I've decided some sort of constructed raised bed is the way to go. I
have no heavy-duty tools, so I'm considering methods of making raised beds
about 4X6 ft, probably two beds, no more than three, that I will fill with
purchased topsoil, peat moss, and compost. I'd like to grow a couple tomato
plants, some lettuce, and flowers. I'm also hoping to have enough room for
space-saving zucchine (aware of the oxymoron ;-) ), cucumbers, etc. In my
heart of hearts I'd love to grow charentais melons, but I've never tried
them and don't know how crowded they'd be. Here's my conundrum: How to
make the raised beds. I've considered children's wading pools with holes in
the bottom. I'm going to purchase plastic barrels for potatoes, and cut
holes in the sides. I'm looking for something I can use for two years at
the most, so the durability of the pools won't be a concern.

Holly
