Re: [Introduction, gardening conundrum]

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Holly,

You put out, so you'll get my assist... (I hate folks who post
such short stuff, that is, when more info should be included...)

Tires or 33 gal garbage bags for potatoes, etc. I'm not a
lover of this. Some pros use large super-soil; bags, laid on the ground, with
a weep drain hole or two, 1/2 to an inch up from the bottom.
They use it one year only, and fertilize less. Esp used for tomatoes.

Here's the idea.
2x12's. THEY cut to length for 50 cents a cut usually,
but a fair saw will do. Use typing paper or a cereal box
for a 90degree angle to mark a line, but probably no
cutting at all.

Now, tie the corners using metal corner braces, A screw would
require a drill, though a cheap one will last you years.
Nails would be ok.

Last, to pinch pennies forget the corner braces per se,
replace them with this. About 2" from the end of each board,
put short nails every inch... thumb tacks are almost OK. Nail
them in except for 1/8 inch. Use wire and go back and forth
like a shoestring pattern. Coathangers are OK, bailing wire will
rust, but is ok. Brass picture hanging wire costs.
Copper wire works, I mean single strand stuff. W or w/o
insulation. Common is 12 gauge. Bigger than you need though.
Once filled, it won't move much. A stake inside each corner
would cure that tho', too.

Keep the boards if you want. Good dirt even sells, used...
:>)
Bill
