Mel Ortho Tomato Lettuce Plan FFruit Trees Bushes

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

>Oh, WOW, Dawn!
You just widened my horizons! My yard is a miserable gravel
patch covered with the last tenant's red crushed rock and
subversive "Wandering Jew" vines. But 5 gal. buckets from the bakery or deli -
wonderful!

**Ortho had a study printed a few years abck showing for amount of soil
PURCHASED... a 5 gal (1/2 cu ft) gave more than larger sizes, for the
PROPORTION of SOIL.

Lettuce, 6-9" deep is fine for most varieties.

GET a general veggie book, like Ortho's for ~$7. unless Mel cover's these
things. I want his book, but am not sure if I can allocate the money for
another book. i've many, and so few plants, am reversing course.

And that wandering Jew, was healping your soil stay moist.
It readily decomposes, and is easy to pull. It's not a
terrible weed! Just a weed. But also a ground cover.
--------------
I HOPE I haven't shared this, and reposted.
Here's my WINTER grocery list.
These are going SO FAST, that in a week you'll miss
out on 1/3 of waht is available in my area. Maybe yours too.

Jan. 2000:

Red raspberries, *3/pk
Baba-Red Raspberry
Bosenberry
Blueberry, Jersey
Blueberry, Blue Crop
Cherry Bush *2/pak
Perlette Grape *2/pak
Cherry tree, Montmorency
Apricot Tree, Moorpark
Rhubarb, Red

Most were $3.50.
Trees were $11.
$57 total.
*(These appear intertwined, but listed as 2-3.
Must plant as one I'm sure.)

The Baba, was a special request I made to Home Depot
many months ago. 2-3 Calls did it, with reasons and research.
I wanted XXX. Their dealer came back with this similar variety.

It's a 2 season/everbearing, a direction I tend toward.
The Apricot is similar. "Uneven ripening" it's called.
Not a ton of crop all at once, which is better for comercial.

May get a Santa Rosa Plum, another apple.
Who can get me a mulberry start? LOL!

The blueberries will be interesting. Hate to buy peat for
the soil, but how else to get a 5.0 acid? Sulfur?
Plus Gypsum to buffer and aid drainage? Hmmm.

To help your planning try Ortho's Veggie book,
"All About Vegetables." I consider it a primer.
I've been able to use it for a ready reference tho',
for years, veggies I haven't done for years, and have
forgotten about. It will help you plan a garden.
Mel's stuff, is HOW to ADAPT, normal stuff, to a
smaller space. Use more than one reference, always.
You can even do a Lemon in 5 gal! Need help?
(This one... moves with you!) :>)
