That Ortho thang.....

>Hey Why don't you use the public library. Plenty of Good stuff there.
>And you're kidding with the ortho stuff right? Man those folks at ortho
>are wack! See a bee in your yard get out the ortho!

Yeah, well I certainly agree that the evil Ortho poisons are things to keep
out of your yard, garden, and life generally. And, they do tend to give
their books that twist that will encourage you to reach for the Ortho
product .....

But, Easy Composting by Ortho is the best picture book of composting out
there, written by Jeff Ball and Robert Kourik, and to that limited extent, I
defend Ortho for having published it, and recommend anyone wanting to
convert their chemically minded neighbors towards a more conserver way of
doing things, to use this fine tool.

Find the good and praise it, as the saying goes....better to light a candle
than curse the darkness.

Other good books on vegetables include those by Ecology Action
www.bountifulgardens.org (How to Grow More Vegetables than you ever thought
possible on less land than you can imagine, by John Jeavons)

The Rodale books are generally good, as mentioned...

Sheperd Ogden's step by step to Organic Vegetable Gardening is good, as are
the books by Eliot Coleman (The New Organic Grower, Four Season Harvest) and
Barbara Damrosch, (The Garden Primer)

Also, that guy down the street or those people at the community garden right
near you with growing conditions almost exactly like yours are a wonderful
resource that should not be ignored. The wide range of methods found in most
community gardens should make you feel comfortable choosing the path you
wish to take....plants are pretty forgiving, and will grow OK if you meet
their minimum needs, and you can meet their every desire as the years pass
and your skills grow.

And, hey, that Mel Bartholemew guy has some pretty good info in his books,
too, eh?

;-)

Good gardening, square, rectangular, and all other geometries....
