We can grow asparagus in our version of zone 9 (AZ Desert). It
tolerates our alkaline soil fairly well. . Might be okay to add rock
powders in acid soil as others have recommended but it would be the
wrong thing to do here. The plants will last for a few years but it is
not the everlasting perennial here as it is in other climates - seems to
fade after a few years and needs to be renewed. Sometimes it will
reseed but I think you need both male and female plants like Mary
Washington. Rather doubt the Jersey Knight all-male types would.reseed.

In our area, you plant the crowns now using the trench-and-fill method
and let it grow all year then cut off the ferns at 2 inches when they
dry out in October. Then cover with straw or manure and keep the roots
moist but not soaking wet. About the end of January, the plants and
spears will start to emerge. You can use the shoots or just let the
plants grow and repeat the procedure until the following year when the
you can harvest all of the spears. The harvest season is only 3-6 weeks
long and may not be worth the time and space. Also, perennials often
need to compete with Bermudagrass with is difficult to control.
