Raspberries

Hi,

Any raspberry growers out there in sqft-land?  I'm planning to tear out
an existing hedge and replace it with raspberries. There is an old fence
behind the hedge that I was planning to use as support for the canes.
My main questions are:

(1)  What spacing is best for raspberries?
(2)  What, if any, special soil preparation is necessary/recommended
before planting?
(3)  What single variety best combines flavor, disease resistance and
high yields?

I've never grown raspberries before, but I have a family of raspberry
addicts and I figure it might be cheaper to grow my own, and
educational/decorative to boot.  Thanks in advance,
