Hi all, I really liked the template idea for planting. Great for working with children, too. In terms of permanent division between squares, I am now digging out terraces on our hillside (mountainside, really) and plan to integrate stone or brick paths within my square-foot plots. Depending how it works, I will either have thin brick or stone lines between the blocs, or else the planting blocs will look like pockets in a larger terrace. I am also going slightly larger than one square foot each - more like 18 inches(45-50 centimeters). I am hoping this will make the blocs easier to work without further compacting our clay soil. It also points up the strong affinity sqft. techniques have with container gardening, as these will basically be large planters let into a rocky mountainside. The sqft and other intensive-growth gardens I have seen are pretty ornamental in their abundance - if you don't clutter them with too many contraptions - and I am planning to companion plant herbs in smaller pockets and planters around the sqft blocs. One question: does anyone know anything about using sunken (not raised) beds to conserve moisture? I know raised beds are all the fashion now in the US, but I have heard that sunken beds are better for arid climates. Comments anyone? Joshua
