I screwed in eye hooks in the middle of my boards of the raised beds, and stretched twine across it, marking 2'x2' areas. Beyond that I just take a guess, and that works just well.
I've also used the eye hooks in the boards, with matching hooks on the fence right behind my raised beds, to install twine for my climbing plants. Works well, too, and I can compost it all when the season is over. (Right now I'm growing very healthy sweet peas and a few rain-weakened sugar snap peas).
Cool and dry in Central CA

Well, at least it wasn't heavy-handed. Margaret
